Medicinal Hemorrhoid Treatments
A variety of herbs and dietary supplements can also help in the treatment of hemorrhoids (also haemorrhoids or piles). These include:
- Butcher’s Broom extract (Ruscus aculeatus) contains ruscogenins that have anti-inflammatory and vascoconstrictor effects. These help tighten and strengthen veins. Butcher’s Broom is a traditional treatment for venous problems, including hemorrhoids and varicose veins.
- Horse Chestnut extract (Aesculus hippocastanum) contains aescin, a saponin that has anti-inflammatory, anti-edema and venotonic actions. It improves tone in the vein walls, strengthening the support structures of the vein. Studies have shown Horse Chestnut helps relieve pain and swelling associated with venous insufficiency.
- Bilberry extract (Vaccinium myrtillus) is a potent bioflavonoid that protects and maintains venous strength and function.
- Bromelain. Another anti-inflammatory and venotonic agent. It is derived from the stem of the pineapple plant. The pineapple fruit also contains Bromelain, but in insufficient concentration to have much effect.
- Japanese Pagoda Tree extract. One of the 50 fundamental herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine. It has anti-inflammatory properties.
- Drinking 99% pure aloe juice can relieve itching and swelling.
- Drinking chamomile tea several times a day can assist defecation.
- Eating fiber-rich bulking agents, such as Plantain and Psyllium seed husks help to create a softer stool that is easier to pass, lessening the irritation of existing hemorrhoids. Mild laxatives or a general increase in dietary fiber intake can have similar benefits. Stronger laxatives, such as those that stimulate the passage of food through the digestive systems, should be avoided, because they can increase straining during defecation and thus aggravate a hemorrhoid condition.
